Overview
What it is
Monorchidism is a developmental condition of the male reproductive system where only one testicle descends into the scrotum. The second testicle either remains trapped inside the abdomen or groin canal, or it failed to develop entirely during embryonic growth.
How it presents
Owners or veterinarians typically notice this condition in puppies between 8 and 12 weeks of age when only a single testicle can be felt in the scrotum. Affected dogs do not experience pain or show any outward symptoms in their daily lives.
Treatment
The condition is resolved with a one-time surgical procedure to remove the undescended testicle, which prevents future health complications. This surgery typically costs between 400 and 1200 EUR.
