Hyperuricosuria(HUU)
Also known as: Hyperurikosurie · SLC2A9-associated hyperuricosuria · Harnsäure-Stoffwechselstörung · Urat-Urolithen · Uratsteine · …
Overview
What it is
Hyperuricosuria is an inherited metabolic disorder affecting the renal system, specifically how the kidneys process uric acid. Due to a genetic mutation, excess uric acid is excreted into the urine rather than being broken down. This high concentration can cause the acid to crystallize, leading to the formation of painful bladder or kidney stones, also known as uroliths.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in young to middle-aged dogs and include blood in the urine, frequent straining, or difficulty urinating. In severe cases, a complete urinary blockage can occur, which is a medical emergency.
Treatment
The condition is manageable with a lifelong special diet and high fluid intake, but surgical removal of stones may be necessary. Lifetime management and surgical costs generally range from €1,500 to €6,000.
