Overview
What it is
These are structural eyelid abnormalities affecting a dog's eyes. In cases of entropion, the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes or fur to rub painfully against the surface of the eyeball. In ectropion, the eyelid sags or rolls outward, leaving the sensitive inner lining of the eye exposed and unprotected.
How it presents
Symptoms usually become noticeable within the dog's first year of life. Owners will typically observe watery or red eyes, frequent squinting, and the dog rubbing its face due to discomfort.
Treatment
The condition is treatable with a one-time surgical correction of the eyelids, which typically costs between 600 and 2500 EUR. This procedure generally resolves the issue permanently and prevents long-term damage to the cornea.
