Gastric dilatation-volvulus(GDV)
Also known as: Magendrehung · Gastric torsion · Bloat · Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus · Magenüberdehnung · …
Overview
What it is
Gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly known as bloat, is a severe condition affecting the stomach and digestive system. It occurs when the stomach fills with gas and twists on itself, trapping the gas and blocking blood flow to vital organs. This twisting can rapidly lead to tissue damage and cardiovascular shock if not treated immediately.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice sudden restlessness, unproductive retching or attempts to vomit, and a visibly swollen, hard abdomen. This condition most commonly affects large, deep-chested dogs during their adult years.
Treatment
This is a critical emergency requiring immediate life-saving surgery to untwist the stomach and secure it in place, alongside intensive shock therapy. While it is a one-time surgical intervention, emergency treatment and post-operative care are highly intensive, typically costing between €2,500 and €7,000.
How it's tested
Issuing body: FCI
Result scheme: HD-FCI
Issuing body: vet
Result scheme: OFA-Hip
