Lupus erythematosus (systemic, cutaneous/discoid)(SLE)
Also known as: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus · Discoid Lupus Erythematosus · DLE · Kutaner Lupus erythematodes · Schmetterlingsflechte · …
Overview
What it is
Lupus erythematosus is a severe autoimmune disease where the dog's immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy tissues. In the cutaneous or discoid form, this damage is limited to the skin, while the systemic form can affect multiple internal organs, including the kidneys, joints, and blood vessels. This abnormal immune response causes chronic inflammation and tissue damage throughout the affected areas.
How it presents
Owners may notice crusting, scaling, or loss of pigment on the nose and face, as well as joint pain, lameness, fever, or general lethargy. These symptoms typically first appear in young to middle-aged adult dogs.
Treatment
While the condition is not curable, it can be managed with lifelong immunosuppressive medications and regular veterinary monitoring. Lifetime treatment and diagnostic costs typically range from 3,000 to 12,000 EUR.
