What it is
Primary hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder where the thyroid gland, located in the neck, fails to produce enough thyroid hormones. This hormone deficiency is usually caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the gland or by the gradual replacement of thyroid tissue with fat. Because these hormones regulate how the body uses energy, a shortage slows down the dog's entire metabolism.
How it presents
Owners typically notice symptoms in middle-aged dogs, often starting between four and nine years of age. Common signs include unexplained weight gain without an increase in appetite, low energy, symmetrical hair loss on the flanks, and a tendency to seek out warm places.
Treatment
The condition is not curable but is highly manageable with lifelong daily oral thyroid hormone supplements. Regular blood tests are required to monitor hormone levels, with lifetime treatment costs typically ranging from 1,500 to 5,000 EUR.
