Fanconi syndrome(FS)
Also known as: Fanconi-Syndrom · Renal Fanconi Syndrome · Basenji Fanconi Syndrome · De Toni-Debré-Fanconi-Syndrom · Renale Tubulopathie · …
Overview
What it is
Fanconi syndrome is an inherited kidney disorder affecting the renal tubules, which are the tiny filtering tubes within the kidneys. Instead of reabsorbing vital nutrients like glucose, amino acids, and electrolytes back into the bloodstream, these damaged tubules allow them to be lost in the urine. This leads to a severe depletion of essential compounds that the dog's body needs to function properly.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable between 3 and 7 years of age, starting with significantly increased thirst and frequent urination. As the disease progresses, owners may observe weight loss, muscle weakness, and signs of advancing kidney failure.
Treatment
While the condition is incurable, it can be managed through lifelong, intensive administration of specific nutritional supplements and regular veterinary monitoring. This ongoing supportive care typically costs between 3,000 and 9,000 EUR over the dog's lifetime.
