What it is
Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC) is an inherited disorder of the nervous system where the communication between the brain and the muscles temporarily breaks down during intense physical activity or high excitement. This neurological failure prevents the muscles from receiving the signals they need to function properly, causing a sudden loss of motor control. It is inherited in an autosomal-recessive manner, meaning a dog must inherit the mutated gene from both parents to be affected.
How it presents
Symptoms typically first appear between 5 months and 3 years of age during strenuous exercise or play. Owners will notice the dog developing a weak, wobbly gait in the hind legs, which quickly progresses to a painless collapse where the dog cannot stand but remains fully conscious.
Treatment
While there is no cure, the condition is managed lifelong by avoiding intense exertion and stressful triggers. Veterinary consultation and diagnostic testing to rule out other conditions typically cost between 300 and 1500 EUR, with ongoing management relying primarily on lifestyle adjustments.
