What it is
Atherosclerosis is a rare cardiovascular condition in dogs where fatty plaques build up inside the arteries, narrowing the blood vessels and restricting blood flow. This typically develops as a secondary complication of underlying metabolic diseases like hypothyroidism or diabetes mellitus, which disrupt how the body processes fats. Over time, the restricted blood flow can damage vital organs that rely on these blood vessels.
How it presents
It is most commonly diagnosed in older dogs, who may show signs of lethargy, generalized weakness, cold extremities, or sudden difficulty walking due to poor circulation. Because the disease progresses slowly, symptoms often remain unnoticed until significant organ damage or sudden complications occur.
Treatment
While the arterial damage itself cannot be reversed, the condition is managed through lifelong treatment of the underlying metabolic disease, dietary changes, and medications to support circulation. Ongoing veterinary care, diagnostics, and long-term therapy typically cost between €2,500 and €8,000.
