Overview
What it is
This is an inherited neurological condition where nerve cells in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls coordination and balance, prematurely degenerate and die. As these cells break down, the brain can no longer properly coordinate voluntary muscle movements. This results in a progressive loss of physical control and stability.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in puppies between 8 and 12 weeks of age, starting with an unsteady, wobbly gait and difficulty balancing. Owners may also notice head tremors and frequent tripping that worsen over time.
Treatment
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and management is focused on supportive care and diagnostic confirmation, which typically costs between 500 and 2000 EUR. Due to the severity of the disease, humane euthanasia is often eventually necessary.
