Digital necrosis
Also known as: Zehennekrose · Toe necrosis · Pedal gangrene · Symmetrical peripheral gangrene · Necrosis of digits
Overview
What it is
Digital necrosis is the death of tissue in a dog's toes, affecting the circulatory and musculoskeletal systems. It occurs when blood flow to the toes is severely restricted by injury, infection, or vasculitis, which is the inflammation of blood vessels. Without oxygen-rich blood, the tissue in the toes dies and cannot be saved.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice severe limping, swelling, and the dog licking its feet, with the affected toes turning a dark bluish-black color and developing a foul odor. This condition can occur at any age, often appearing suddenly after an injury or slowly as a complication of another illness.
Treatment
The condition is treatable, typically requiring a one-time surgical amputation of the affected toes alongside pain relief and antibiotics. Total treatment and recovery costs generally range from €1,000 to €3,500.
