Vitamin K-dependent coagulation factor deficiency(VKCFD)
Also known as: Vitamin-K-abhängiger Gerinnungsfaktormangel · Hereditary vitamin K-dependent coagulation factor deficiency · Congenital VKCFD · Vitamin-K-dependent blood coagulation factors deficiency
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited blood clotting disorder affecting the cardiovascular system, where the body cannot properly activate essential proteins needed to stop bleeding. Because these proteins require vitamin K to function, their deficiency prevents the blood from coagulating normally. This leads to a high risk of spontaneous or prolonged bleeding.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in young puppies and include visible signs like bleeding gums, nosebleeds, blood in the stool or urine, and severe bruising from minor contact. Owners may also notice that minor cuts or scratches bleed for an unusually long time.
Treatment
While there is no cure, the condition can be managed long-term with daily vitamin K1 supplements and emergency blood transfusions if severe bleeding occurs. Lifelong veterinary care and medication costs are expected to range from €2,000 to €10,000.
How it's tested
Vitamin-K-dependent blood coagulation factors deficiency (VKCFD) Gentest(VKCFD)
