What it is
This is an inherited heart condition affecting the cardiovascular system, where abnormal electrical signals originate in the lower chambers of the heart, known as the ventricles. These irregular heartbeats, called ventricular arrhythmias, disrupt the heart's normal pumping rhythm and prevent it from circulating blood effectively to the rest of the body.
How it presents
Symptoms like sudden weakness, exercise intolerance, or fainting spells typically appear between 3 and 24 months of age. In some cases, the condition can lead to sudden collapse or sudden cardiac death without any prior warning signs.
Treatment
The condition requires lifelong daily medication to control the heart rhythm, alongside regular veterinary cardiologist check-ups and heart monitoring. Managing this disease over a dog's lifetime typically costs between 2,000 and 7,000 EUR.
