Ventricular septal defect(VSD)
Also known as: Ventrikelseptumdefekt · Kammerscheidewanddefekt · Congenital ventricular septal defect · Interventricular septal defect · Loch in der Herzscheidewand
Overview
What it is
A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a congenital heart defect where a hole exists in the wall, or septum, that separates the left and right lower chambers of the heart. This opening allows blood to flow abnormally between these chambers, forcing the heart and lungs to work much harder than normal. Over time, this abnormal circulation can lead to fluid accumulation in the lungs and heart failure.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable during puppyhood or adolescence. Owners may observe rapid breathing, coughing, poor growth, and a tendency to tire quickly during play or exercise.
Treatment
Depending on the size of the defect, management can range from regular monitoring via echocardiography to lifelong medication or specialized surgery. Treatment costs typically range from €1,000 to €8,000.
How it's tested
