Van den Ende-Gupta syndrome(VDEGS)
Also known as: Van den Ende-Gupta-Syndrom
Overview
What it is
Van den Ende-Gupta syndrome is an inherited developmental disorder that primarily affects the skeletal system, including the skull and joints. It is caused by a genetic mutation that disrupts normal bone and cartilage formation, leading to structural abnormalities. This results in characteristic malformations of the face and limbs.
How it presents
Symptoms are visible from birth or early puppyhood and typically include a noticeably shortened upper jaw, abnormally formed eyelids, and stiff joints. Owners may also observe difficulty walking or running due to kneecaps that slip out of place.
Treatment
While the underlying condition is incurable, symptoms can be managed through corrective orthopedic surgeries and ongoing physical therapy. These lifelong supportive care measures and surgical procedures typically cost between 3,000 and 10,000 EUR.
