Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease(LCPD)
Also known as: Aseptische Oberschenkelkopfnekrose · Avascular necrosis of the femoral head · Femurkopfnekrose · Legg-Perthes-Krankheit · Coxa plana · …
Overview
What it is
Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is a serious orthopedic condition affecting the hip joint, primarily in small breed dogs. It occurs when the blood supply to the head of the thigh bone, known as the femur, is spontaneously disrupted. Without blood, this bone tissue dies and collapses, leading to severe joint inflammation and pain.
How it presents
Owners typically notice progressive limping, holding the affected hind leg up, and signs of pain during hip movement. These symptoms usually first appear in young dogs between 4 and 12 months of age.
Treatment
The condition is treatable through a one-time surgery to remove the damaged bone head or replace the hip joint, followed by physical rehabilitation. This corrective treatment typically costs between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR.
