Accessory tragus
Also known as: Ohranhängsel · Preauricular tag · Preauricular appendage · Supernumerary tragus · Akzessorischer Tragus
Overview
What it is
An accessory tragus is a harmless, congenital (present from birth) malformation of the outer ear, where extra skin or cartilage tissue forms near the opening of the ear canal. This condition is extremely rare in dogs, with the first documented canine case reported in 2020 in an American Pit Bull Terrier. These benign ear tags do not affect the dog's hearing or normal ear function.
How it presents
Owners will notice a small, painless bump or dangling tag of skin and cartilage just in front of the puppy's ear canal, which is present from birth. It does not cause itching, pain, or discomfort.
Treatment
Treatment is generally not required as this is a purely cosmetic issue that does not harm the dog. If removal is desired for cosmetic reasons or if irritation occurs, the tag can be surgically removed in a simple, one-time procedure costing between 0 and 500 EUR.
