Thoracoabdominal syndrome(TAS)
Also known as: Pentalogy of Cantrell · Cantrell-Pentalogie · Cantrell syndrome
Overview
What it is
Thorakoabdominales Syndrom, also known as Pentalogy of Cantrell, is a rare congenital condition where the midline of the body fails to fuse properly during embryonic development. This results in structural defects in the chest and abdominal walls, specifically affecting the breastbone, diaphragm, and surrounding tissues. In severe cases, internal organs may be displaced or lack proper protection.
How it presents
Signs are typically visible immediately at birth or within the first few weeks of life. Owners will notice physical malformations of the chest or belly, severe breathing difficulties, and a general failure to nurse or thrive.
Treatment
The condition is often fatal, but mild cases may be addressed with complex, high-risk surgical reconstruction. These intensive procedures and associated veterinary care generally cost between €1,500 and €6,000.
