Stomatocytosis and gastritis
Also known as: Hereditary stomatocytosis and hypertrophic gastritis · Schnauzer stomatocytosis-gastritis syndrome · Stomatozytose und Gastritis · Canine stomatocytosis with gastritis
Overview
What it is
This inherited condition affects both the blood and the digestive system, causing deformed red blood cells and a chronic thickening of the stomach lining. The abnormally shaped red blood cells, known as stomatocytes, cannot carry oxygen effectively, while the thickened stomach lining leads to severe, ongoing inflammation (gastritis). It is passed down as an autosomal-recessive trait.
How it presents
Owners typically notice symptoms starting at a young age, including chronic vomiting, progressive weight loss, and general weakness or lethargy caused by anemia.
Treatment
The condition is incurable and requires lifelong management with specialized diets and medications to control symptoms. Lifetime treatment costs are high, typically ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 EUR.
