Sick sinus syndrome(SSS)
Also known as: Sinusknotensyndrom · Sick-Sinus-Syndrom · Sinus node dysfunction · SND · Bradycardia-tachycardia syndrome
Overview
What it is
Sick sinus syndrome is a disorder of the heart's electrical system, specifically affecting the sinoatrial node, which acts as the heart's natural pacemaker. This malfunction causes the heart to beat too slowly, too quickly, or with long pauses, disrupting normal blood flow to the body. An echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) is typically performed alongside electrical monitoring to rule out other structural heart diseases before proceeding with treatment.
How it presents
Owners typically notice symptoms in middle-aged to older dogs, including extreme weakness, exercise intolerance, stumbling, or sudden fainting spells. These episodes occur when the brain temporarily does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood due to the irregular heartbeats.
Treatment
The condition is treatable, most effectively through the surgical implantation of a permanent pacemaker, which is a one-time procedure. This surgery and the associated cardiac workup typically cost between 3,000 and 6,000 EUR.
