Scoliosis
Also known as: Skoliose · Wirbelsäulenverkrümmung · Spinal curvature · Congenital scoliosis · Lateral spinal curvature
Overview
What it is
Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine, which is part of the dog's skeletal system. It is usually caused by congenital malformations, meaning the individual bones of the spine, called vertebrae, fail to develop normally before birth. This structural misalignment can put pressure on the spinal cord, leading to nerve issues.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become visible during puppyhood as the dog grows. Owners may notice a visibly curved or asymmetrical back, an unstable or wobbly walk, and signs of pain or weakness in the hind limbs.
Treatment
Mild cases are managed long-term with pain relief and physical therapy, while severe cases may require complex corrective surgery. Total treatment costs generally range from €1,500 to €8,000 depending on the severity and the need for surgical intervention.
