The condition is inherited in an autosomal-recessive manner, meaning a puppy must inherit the mutated gene from both parents.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable in puppies between 5 and 8 weeks of age. Owners will observe an inability to move the legs, severe coordination issues, and signs of blindness.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and affected puppies face a rapid decline in quality of life. Humane euthanasia is typically required, with veterinary costs for diagnosis and end-of-life care ranging from 300 to 1000 EUR.
