Pulmonary stenosis(PS)
Also known as: Pulmonalstenose · Congenital pulmonary stenosis · Pulmonarklappenstenose · Right ventricular outflow tract obstruction · Congenital pulmonic stenosis · …
Overview
What it is
Pulmonary stenosis is a congenital heart defect characterized by a narrowing of the pulmonary valve or the outflow tract leading from the heart to the lungs. This narrowing restricts blood flow, forcing the right side of the heart to work much harder to pump blood. Over time, this constant strain can lead to thickening of the heart muscle and potential heart failure.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable during puppyhood or adolescence. Owners may observe rapid fatigue, shortness of breath during exercise, pale or bluish gums, or sudden fainting spells.
Treatment
While mild cases may only require monitoring, moderate to severe cases are treated with lifelong medication or a minimally invasive balloon catheter surgery to widen the valve. Depending on the chosen approach, treatment costs typically range from 1,500 to 6,000 EUR.
