Also known as: Prostatakarzinom · Canine prostate cancer · Prostata-Adenokarzinom · Prostatic adenocarcinoma · Prostatatumor beim Hund
Overview
What it is
Prostate cancer is a severe, malignant tumor originating in the prostate gland, which is part of the male reproductive system. Unlike in humans, this cancer develops regardless of whether a dog has been neutered. The tumor is highly aggressive, meaning it grows rapidly and frequently spreads, or metastasizes, to other parts of the body like the lymph nodes, lungs, and bones.
How it presents
This condition typically affects older male dogs, who may show difficulty or pain when urinating or defecating, sometimes with blood visible in the urine. Owners might also notice a stiff hind-limb gait, unexplained weight loss, or general weakness as the disease progresses.
Treatment
While a complete cure is rarely possible, treatment focuses on managing pain and slowing progression through palliative therapies like chemotherapy, radiation, or medication. This ongoing management is lifelong and typically costs between €1,500 and €6,000.
