Priapism
Also known as: Priapismus · Dauererektion · Persistent penile erection · Canine priapism · Priapismus beim Hund
Overview
What it is
Priapism is a reproductive system disorder characterized by a persistent, painful erection of the penis that occurs without sexual stimulation. It happens when blood becomes trapped in the erectile tissue due to impaired drainage or neurological dysfunction. If left untreated, the lack of proper blood flow can cause permanent tissue damage.
How it presents
An owner will notice the dog's penis remaining protruded from its protective sheath, often appearing swollen, dry, or abnormally dark in color. The dog will typically lick the area constantly and may show signs of pain or struggle to urinate.
Treatment
This is an emergency condition that requires immediate veterinary treatment, which can range from medical drainage to surgical amputation in severe cases. It is treated as a one-time crisis rather than a lifelong illness. Resolving this condition typically costs between 400 and 2500 EUR.
