Thyroid follicular cell carcinoma, susceptibility to
Overview
What it is
This genetic predisposition increases a dog's risk of developing follicular thyroid carcinoma, which is a malignant cancer of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is an endocrine organ in the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism. In affected dogs, genetic mutations cause the hormone-producing cells in this gland to grow uncontrollably and form aggressive tumors.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in middle-aged to older dogs, often starting as a firm, touchable lump in the neck area. As the tumor grows, owners may notice difficulty swallowing, changes in the dog's bark, or labored breathing.
Treatment
Treatment is possible and typically involves surgical removal of the tumor, which may be followed by chemotherapy or radiation, alongside lifelong thyroid hormone replacement. This complex medical care generally costs between €2,500 and €8,500.
