Polymicrogyria and asymmetrical ventricular dilation(PMG)
Also known as: Polymicrogyria · Asymmetrical ventricular dilation · Bilateral frontoparietal polymicrogyria · Cortical dysplasia in Standard Poodles
Overview
What it is
This is a congenital brain malformation affecting the central nervous system, where the outer layer of the brain develops too many abnormally small folds. It is also characterized by an uneven enlargement of the fluid-filled cavities within the brain, known as asymmetric ventricular dilation. These structural abnormalities disrupt normal brain development and communication.
How it presents
Affected puppies typically show signs within the first few weeks of life. Owners will notice severe neurological symptoms such as blindness, difficulty coordinating movements, behavioral changes, and seizures.
Treatment
The condition is incurable, and management is limited to lifelong supportive care and seizure control, typically costing between 500 and 3,000 EUR. While research is ongoing at the University of Missouri and the University of Pennsylvania to identify the genetic cause, no DNA test is currently available.
