Pheochromocytoma(PHEO)
Also known as: Phäochromozytom · Adrenal medullary tumor · Chromaffin tumor · Nebennierenmarktumor
Overview
What it is
A pheochromocytoma is a tumor of the adrenal gland, which is a small hormone-producing organ located near the kidneys. This tumor causes the gland to release excessive, uncontrolled amounts of stress hormones like adrenaline into the bloodstream. These hormones normally regulate vital functions, but their overproduction severely disrupts the cardiovascular system and other organs.
How it presents
This condition typically affects older dogs. Owners may notice sudden fainting spells, extreme restlessness, increased thirst, and a rapid or racing heart rate.
Treatment
Diagnosis is often performed using an abdominal ultrasound to identify the adrenal mass. Treatment typically involves either high-risk surgical removal of the gland or lifelong medical management, with costs ranging from €2,500 to €7,500.
How it's tested
