Pancreatitis
Also known as: Bauchspeicheldrüsenentzündung · Canine Pancreatitis · Akute Pankreatitis · Chronische Pankreatitis · Pancreatitis, hereditary · …
Overview
What it is
Pancreatitis is a serious inflammatory condition of the pancreas, an organ in the abdomen responsible for producing digestive enzymes and hormones like insulin. In affected dogs, these digestive enzymes activate too early while still inside the pancreas, causing the organ to digest and damage its own tissue. This can lead to widespread inflammation affecting the metabolic and digestive systems.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice sudden and severe vomiting, a loss of appetite, extreme lethargy, and signs of intense abdominal pain, such as the dog stretching its front legs out while keeping its rear in the air.
Treatment
The condition is treatable but often requires intensive veterinary care, including intravenous fluids, pain management, and a strict low-fat diet. Depending on whether it is an acute flare-up or a chronic, lifelong condition, treatment costs typically range from 500 to 5000 EUR.
How it's tested
