Nose, bifid, PDGFRA-related
Also known as: Bifid nose · Split nose · PDGFRA-associated bifid nose · Spaltnase · Cleft nose · …
Overview
What it is
This is a genetic developmental disorder affecting the respiratory system and facial structure, caused by a mutation in the PDGFRA gene. It results in a bifid nose, which means the nasal structure is split or divided down the middle into two halves. This condition is inherited in an autosomal-dominant pattern, meaning a puppy only needs to inherit one copy of the mutated gene from a single parent to show the trait.
How it presents
The split in the nose is a physical malformation that is clearly visible immediately at birth. Depending on the depth of the cleft, owners may also notice noisy breathing, snoring, nasal discharge, or frequent respiratory infections as the puppy grows.
Treatment
Mild cases that do not affect the dog's breathing may not require any medical intervention. Severe cases that impair breathing can be corrected with a one-time reconstructive surgery, with treatment costs typically ranging from 300 to 3500 EUR.
