Progressive Neuronopathy(PN)
Also known as: Cairn Terrier Progressive Neuronopathy · Hereditäre progressive Neuronopathie · Neurodegenerative Erkrankung des Cairn Terriers · Neuronopathy, progressive
Overview
What it is
Progressive neuronopathy is an inherited neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord. In this condition, the nerve cells that transmit signals throughout the body gradually break down and lose their ability to function. Because these vital communication pathways degenerate, the brain can no longer properly control the dog's muscles and movements.
How it presents
Owners typically notice symptoms starting between 3 and 5 months of age, beginning with tremors, muscle weakness, and difficulty coordinating movements. These signs quickly worsen, leading to severe, progressive paralysis.
Treatment
There is no cure for this fatal condition, and veterinary care is limited to supportive therapy and diagnostic testing. Managing the dog's comfort and diagnostics typically costs between 500 and 2500 EUR.
