Neurofibromatosis(NF)
Also known as: Canine neurofibromatosis · Neurofibromatose beim Hund · Peripheral nerve sheath tumors · Schwannomatosis in dogs · NF1-like syndrome in dogs
Overview
What it is
Neurofibromatosis is a rare disorder of the nervous system where tumors, called neurofibromas, grow along the dog's nerve pathways. These tumors, which can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), cause damage by putting physical pressure on the nerves and surrounding organs.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in middle-aged dogs and often include visible lumps under the skin, lameness, or pain. Depending on which nerves are affected, dogs may also show neurological signs such as weakness or paralysis.
Treatment
While there is no cure, the condition is managed through surgical removal of tumors and lifelong pain relief. Treatment and supportive care typically cost between 2,500 and 8,000 EUR.
