What it is
This is a severe, inherited neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. It is caused by a genetic mutation that leads to abnormal swelling in the nerve fibers, known as axons, preventing proper communication between nerve cells. Over time, this swelling leads to the progressive degeneration of nerve tissue.
How it presents
Symptoms typically begin within the first few months of life and progress rapidly. Owners will likely notice coordination problems, tremors, behavioral changes, and vision impairment.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and treatment is limited to supportive care and eventual humane euthanasia. Managing the dog's comfort and palliative care typically costs between 500 and 2000 EUR.
