What it is
Nephronophthisis is a severe kidney disease characterized by progressive scarring of the renal tubules, which are the tiny structures that filter waste from the blood. As the healthy kidney tissue is replaced by scar tissue, the kidneys gradually lose their ability to concentrate urine and filter toxins. While previously associated with specific genetic markers, the exact inheritance pattern in dogs is currently unknown.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear during puppyhood or adolescence and include increased thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, and weight loss. These signs reflect the progressive loss of kidney function.
Treatment
There is no cure for this disease, so management focuses on lifelong supportive care such as specialized diets and fluid therapy. This ongoing supportive treatment typically costs between €1,500 and €6,000.
