Progressive subacute myopathy
Also known as: Subacute progressive myopathy · Hereditäre Myopathie · Erbliche Muskelschwäche des Hundes · Myopathy, progressive, subacute
Overview
What it is
This is an extremely rare muscle disorder where the muscle fibers progressively break down and lose their strength over a relatively short period. It affects the musculoskeletal system, specifically the skeletal muscles that control voluntary movement. Because it is so rare, having only been documented in a single 1994 case report, the exact biological cause remains unknown.
How it presents
Affected dogs typically show signs of progressive weakness, a stiff way of walking, and tiring quickly during exercise. These symptoms usually appear during puppyhood or adolescence and worsen over several weeks or months.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and treatment is limited to supportive care to manage symptoms. Lifetime palliative care and veterinary monitoring typically cost between €1,500 and €5,000.
