Myelin defect (redundant)
Also known as: Redundant myelin sheath · Redundant myelin sheath disease · Congenital myelin defect · Myelin defect of Samoyeds · RMS · …
Overview
What it is
This is a genetic disorder of the nervous system where the protective covering around nerve fibers, called the myelin sheath, grows excessively. This redundant myelin disrupts the normal transmission of electrical signals between the brain and the rest of the body. Because these nerve impulses are severely impaired, the dog cannot properly coordinate its movements.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable in puppies around three to four weeks of age, just as they begin trying to walk. Owners will observe pronounced body tremors, muscle weakness, and a significant lack of coordination.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and treatment is limited to supportive care to keep the dog comfortable. Managing this disease typically costs between 1,000 and 4,000 EUR, though affected dogs unfortunately have a very limited life expectancy.
