Overview
What it is
Mycosis fungoides is a rare, malignant type of skin cancer known as a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. In this condition, abnormal white blood cells, which normally help the body fight infection, mistakenly accumulate in the skin layers. This buildup disrupts the normal structure of the skin and leads to progressive tissue damage.
How it presents
Typically seen in older dogs, the condition initially presents as persistent itching, redness, and flaky skin. As it progresses, owners will notice the development of raised, firm skin bumps and open, non-healing sores.
Treatment
There is no cure for this disease, but palliative treatments like chemotherapy and specialized medications can help manage symptoms. This lifelong support typically costs between 2,500 and 8,000 EUR.
