Meningioma
Also known as: Meningeom · Canine meningioma · Hirnhauttumor · Brain tumor · Meningeal tumor
Overview
What it is
A meningioma is a slow-growing tumor that arises from the meninges, which are the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. As the tumor grows, it creates physical pressure on these delicate nervous system structures, leading to progressive nerve damage. Although these tumors are typically non-cancerous (benign) and do not spread to other organs, their location makes them highly serious.
How it presents
This condition is most commonly diagnosed in older dogs. Owners typically notice neurological signs such as seizures, sudden behavioral or personality changes, disorientation, or weakness and signs of paralysis.
Treatment
Management can involve surgical removal, radiation therapy, or medication to relieve symptoms, though advanced diagnostics like an MRI are necessary first. Treatment costs generally range from 1,500 to 10,000 EUR, and while therapy can improve comfort, the disease is often ultimately life-limiting.
