Alpha-mannosidosis(AMD)
Also known as: Alpha-Mannosidase Deficiency · Lysosomal Storage Disease Mannosidosis · Alpha-D-Mannosidose
Overview
What it is
Alpha-mannosidosis is an inherited metabolic disorder where the body lacks a vital enzyme needed to break down complex sugars. Without this enzyme, these sugars build up inside the cells, particularly damaging the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. This cellular buildup leads to progressive and severe neurological damage.
How it presents
Affected puppies typically begin showing signs between 6 and 12 weeks of age. Owners will notice symptoms such as body tremors, a lack of coordination or wobbly gait, hearing loss, and progressive changes in behavior.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and veterinary care is limited to supportive comfort care and eventual humane euthanasia. Managing the puppy's comfort and diagnostic testing typically costs between 500 and 2000 EUR.
