Waldenström's macroglobulinemia(WM)
Also known as: Waldenstroms Macroglobulinemia · Canine Waldenström's Macroglobulinemia · IgM Monoclonal Gammopathy · Waldenström-Makroglobulinämie · Hyperviscosity Syndrome
Overview
What it is
Waldenström's macroglobulinemia is a rare type of blood cancer where abnormal white blood cells produce excessive amounts of a protein called immunoglobulin M. This excess protein causes the blood to become abnormally thick and sticky, which severely impairs circulation. As a result, vital organs throughout the body do not receive adequate blood flow and oxygen.
How it presents
Typically seen in middle-aged to senior dogs, this condition presents with symptoms like extreme lethargy, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, coordination issues, or sudden blindness. These signs are caused by poor circulation and bleeding tendencies.
Treatment
Although the condition is incurable, it can be managed long-term with chemotherapy and supportive therapies to improve blood flow. This lifelong management requires regular veterinary visits and typically costs between 3,000 and 12,000 EUR.
