What it is
Lysosomal storage diseases are inherited metabolic disorders where a dog's cells lack the specific enzymes needed to break down cellular waste. Without these enzymes, waste products build up inside the cells and cause severe, progressive damage to organs, particularly the brain and nervous system.
How it presents
Puppies typically appear normal at birth but begin showing signs within their first year of life. Owners may notice progressive neurological issues such as tremors, uncoordinated movement, behavioral changes, and blindness.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and treatment is limited to supportive care to maintain comfort. Diagnostic and palliative care costs typically range from 500 to 2500 EUR, and euthanasia is eventually required to prevent suffering.
