Ligneous conjunctivitis(PLGD)
Also known as: Plasminogen deficiency · Hypoplasminogenemia · Holzartige Bindehautentzündung · Holzartige Membranitis
Overview
What it is
Ligneous membranitis is a severe inherited disorder affecting the eyes and mucous membranes, caused by a lack of plasminogen, which is a protein responsible for breaking down clot-forming proteins. Without enough plasminogen, tough, wood-like deposits build up on moist tissues, particularly the eyes. This results in chronic, severe inflammation of the eye membranes.
How it presents
Symptoms usually appear during puppyhood or adolescence as chronically red, watery eyes. Owners will notice thick, yellowish-grey, tough membranes forming on the inner surfaces of the dog's eyelids.
Treatment
This condition is incurable and requires lifelong, intensive daily management with specialized eye drops and regular veterinary monitoring. Lifetime treatment costs generally range from 2,500 to 10,000 EUR.
How it's tested
Plasminogen-Mangel (PLGD) DNA-Test(PLGD)
Primary testDNA testDer DNA-Test identifiziert die ursächliche Mutation im PLG-Gen, die zu einem Mangel an Plasminogen und der Entstehung von ligneöser Membranitis führt.
Issuing body: Labogen
