Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency Type I (Irish Setter)(CLAD-I)
Also known as: Canine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency · CLAD · Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency Type I · Canine Granulocytopathy · Granulozyten-Adhäsionsdefizienz · …
Overview
What it is
Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency Type I is a severe inherited immune system disorder where white blood cells cannot properly stick to and migrate into infected tissues. Because these defensive cells cannot reach the site of an infection, the body is unable to fight off bacteria and other pathogens. This leads to widespread, uncontrolled infections throughout the body.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear in young puppies and include recurrent, slow-healing infections of the skin, gums, and respiratory tract, often accompanied by a persistent fever. Owners may also notice severe swelling of the gums and lymph nodes.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and it is unfortunately fatal at a young age. Supportive care with antibiotics can temporarily manage infections, with treatment costs typically ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 EUR.
