Leukodystrophy, CYTB-related
Also known as: CYTB-related leukodystrophy · Mitochondrial leukodystrophy · Cytochrome b leukodystrophy · Mitochondriale Leukodystrophie · CYTB-Leukodystrophie · …
Overview
What it is
This is a severe hereditary disease of the nervous system caused by a defect in a mitochondrial gene, which is responsible for cellular energy production. This defect leads to the progressive breakdown of myelin, the protective fatty sheath that insulates nerve fibers in the brain. Without this protective coating, the brain cannot properly transmit electrical signals to the rest of the body.
How it presents
Symptoms typically begin during puppyhood or adolescence. Owners may notice progressive coordination problems, muscle weakness, tremors, vision loss, and changes in behavior.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, and treatment is limited to supportive care to keep the dog comfortable. Palliative management typically costs between 500 and 2500 EUR, and euthanasia is eventually necessary to prevent suffering.
