Laryngeal paralysis, RAPGEF6-related(LP)
Also known as: RAPGEF6-related laryngeal paralysis · Laryngeal Paralysis in Miniature Bull Terriers · Hereditary Laryngeal Paralysis · Kehlkopflähmung beim Miniature Bull Terrier · RAPGEF6-assoziierte Kehlkopflähmung
Overview
What it is
This condition is an inherited disorder of the respiratory system where the nerves controlling the larynx (voice box) degenerate due to a genetic variant in the RAPGEF6 gene. Because these nerves fail, the vocal cords cannot open properly during inhalation, which restricts airflow into the lungs. The genetic risk factor has complex inheritance, meaning not every dog with the variant will develop the disease.
How it presents
Owners typically notice symptoms in puppies or young adult dogs, starting with loud, raspy breathing and a change in their bark. Over time, this can progress to exercise intolerance, gagging, and severe breathing difficulties, particularly during hot weather or stressful situations.
Treatment
While the nerve damage itself cannot be cured, a one-time surgical procedure called a laryngeal tie-back can permanently widen the airway to restore breathing. This surgery and associated care typically cost between 2,000 and 5,000 EUR, and requires lifelong precautions to prevent food or water from entering the lungs.
How it's tested
RAPGEF6-Larynxparalyse DNA-Test(LP (RAPGEF6))
Primary testDNA testDieser DNA-Test identifiziert die ursächliche Mutation im RAPGEF6-Gen, die für die erbliche Kehlkopflähmung (Larynxparalyse) verantwortlich ist.
