Complement deficiency(C3D)
Also known as: C3 Deficiency · Complement C3 Deficiency · Komplement-C3-Defizienz · Komplementdefekt · Complement 3 Deficiency · …
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited disorder of the immune system where the dog lacks key proteins belonging to the complement system. The complement system is a group of proteins in the blood that normally work together to help the body recognize and destroy invading bacteria. Without these proteins, the dog's natural defense mechanism is severely compromised.
How it presents
Symptoms usually begin in puppyhood, with affected dogs suffering from recurrent, severe bacterial infections such as deep skin inflammation or blood poisoning. Over time, owners may also notice signs of kidney damage, including increased drinking and urination.
Treatment
There is no cure for this condition, meaning treatment is lifelong and focuses on managing infections with intensive antibiotic therapy as they arise. The estimated lifetime cost for this supportive care ranges from €3,000 to €12,000.
