Schnauzer comedo syndrome(SCS)
Also known as: Schnauzer-Komedonen-Syndrom · Schnauzer bumps · Komedonensyndrom der Schnauzer · Follicular keratosis of Schnauzers · Schnauzer comedone syndrome · …
Overview
What it is
Schnauzer comedo syndrome is an inherited skin condition where the hair follicles produce too much keratin, a protective skin protein. This excess material blocks the pores, leading to the formation of blackheads (comedones) primarily along the dog's back. It is a lifelong, benign disorder of the skin system that most commonly affects Miniature Schnauzers.
How it presents
Symptoms usually appear in young adulthood as visible blackheads, crusty bumps, and thinning hair along the spine. If these clogged pores become infected, the dog may develop itchy, red, or painful skin lesions.
Treatment
This lifelong condition cannot be cured, but it is easily managed using specialized topical shampoos and skin cleansers. Managing the symptoms and treating occasional secondary infections typically costs between €600 and €2,500 over the dog's lifetime.
