Inflammatory Myopathy (Dutch Shepherd)(IM)
Also known as: Inflammatory Myopathy · Dutch Shepherd Inflammatory Myopathy · Myopathie beim Holländischen Schäferhund · IM in Dutch Shepherds · Muskelentzündung Holländischer Schäferhund
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the skeletal muscles, which are the muscles responsible for voluntary movement. This persistent inflammation causes the progressive breakdown and degeneration of muscle tissue throughout the body. Because it is an autosomal-recessive disorder, it occurs when a puppy inherits two copies of the mutated gene.
How it presents
Affected puppies typically begin showing symptoms between 3 and 9 months of age. Owners will usually notice progressive muscle weakness, a stiff or clumsy gait, visible muscle wasting, and difficulties with swallowing or breathing.
Treatment
There is no cure for this progressive disease, and supportive therapies can only temporarily manage symptoms. Palliative care and diagnostic costs typically range from 1,000 to 3,500 EUR, and euthanasia is often necessary at an early age to prevent suffering.
