Immunodeficiency
Also known as: Immundefekt · Severe Combined Immunodeficiency · SCID · Primary Immunodeficiency · Immunglobulinmangel
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited disorder of the immune system where the dog's body cannot produce a proper defense against common pathogens. Because the immune system is severely compromised, the body is unable to fight off routine bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This leaves the dog highly vulnerable to frequent and severe infections.
How it presents
Symptoms typically appear during puppyhood and include recurring, slow-healing skin, respiratory, or gastrointestinal infections. Owners may also notice chronic diarrhea, lethargy, and a general failure to grow or gain weight at a normal rate.
Treatment
There is no cure for this genetic condition, and management requires intensive, lifelong supportive care to treat secondary infections. Treatment is highly demanding and typically costs between €1,500 and €8,000.
How it's tested
