Ichthyosis, DSP-related
Also known as: Desmoplakin-associated ichthyosis · DSP-related ichthyosis · Desmoplakin-related keratoderma · Canine DSP ichthyosis · Ichthyose (DSP-Gen) · …
Overview
What it is
This is an inherited skin disease caused by a genetic mutation in the desmoplakin (DSP) gene, which normally helps skin cells stick together securely. Without functioning desmoplakin, the outer layer of the skin cannot maintain its protective barrier, leading to severe scaling and structural weakness. This condition is inherited in an autosomal-dominant manner, meaning a dog only needs to inherit one copy of the mutated gene to be affected.
How it presents
Owners will typically notice heavy, widespread skin scaling starting in puppyhood. The dog's paw pads and nose may become abnormally thick and hard, developing painful cracks that are prone to infection.
Treatment
The condition is incurable and requires lifelong, intensive management with specialized topical therapies and veterinary care. Lifetime treatment and maintenance costs are estimated to range from 3,000 to 10,000 EUR.
How it's tested
